Purpose of Public Schools
I think the purpose of public schools is to enrich the lives of all who attend. Teachers especially in public schools hold a responsibility to nurture and grow the minds of the next generation. Without the public schools a lot of people regardless of creed, race, or wealth status would be at a distinct disadvantage in this country. I feel that not only is public school the great equalizer in that it gives everyone a chance to invest and build in a future for themselves, but it also greatly helps kids and people experience a variety of backgrounds and cultures allowing all who attend to soak up some diversity as they get prepared to live in a diverse multicultural society. To expand on that a great deal of the purpose of public schools is to mold young minds to achieve their goals moving towards the future. Yet I would say that while there should be a focus on reviewing content and teaching skills that’s not all there is to it. While teachers do focus on subject areas, I think that public schools give students an environment to develop team building skills with their peers and prepare them to work in a professional environment. Having a schedule. a set eating time and being able to take assessments and work on time management skills only serves to benefit students compared to those who don’t have these opportunities to attend any type of schooling whether private or public. Overall, the goal of public schools should be to educate , prepare and enrich the lives of our students so they can stand on some foundational skills before either attending college or the work force.
I liked how you mentioned that public schools give students a chance to experience a variety of background and cultures, it is so important for everyone to interact with everyone and learn as much as we can about others. Thats something i'm looking forward to as a teacher to give my students plenty of opportunities to learn about diversity.
ReplyDeleteExactly! One of my own experiences with this was in history class in middle school being assigned a cultural project. Were students would have to create a presentation on a different country other than the U.S . In these projects we had people bring in different food dishes , create powerpoints , or other media and present it to the class, by the end of everyone’s displays every student had learned at least one thing new about a different part of the world.
DeleteI love how you detail the culture aspect because I believe it is important when it comes to socializing. Education is important but so is knowing how to interact with others and be respectful of cultures.
ReplyDeleteI think its very important to give these students a base line to learn to appreciate other people and culture so they can learn and grow and work well with a diverse world. I do believe as educators we have a duty to prepare and open students minds to interact with things they are unfamiliar with.
DeleteI really enjoyed how you mentioned diversity as being a part of society, which is a great reason as to why it’s something that is important to be aware of in life . Seeing different people coming from different cultures , and into a classroom we as future educators want them to feel comfortable and we need to teach that through the students first . Lastly I totally forgot how school could shape someone’s lifestyle. I used to sleep in all day, and now I get up to start my day off with studying, and getting some good exercise in . It’s crazy to see school shaping someone’s schedule.
ReplyDeleteSchool can really influence your schedule and how you interact with the world based on how your educators made information open to you !
DeleteHi Michael! I agree with what you said about a lot of people not being able to have an education without public schools. Public schools are extremely important to make sure that everyone gets an equal opportunity to have an education no matter their financial status. It is very important that everyone is treated equally, especially when it is concerning education. Also, I agree with what you said about school shaping a person's lifestyle! It is important for people to have a routine each day to be productive. Overall, great job on your post!
ReplyDeletePublic education serves as nothing but a benefit to all kids nationwide, while their certainty can be improvement I think as a teacher public schools prepare our students for a variety of diversity so they don't have too much of a culture shock going to a university or the working world.
